Kids are thrilled when they spot wildlife... The soul stirs when a breeze skims across a lake... We love the Great Outdoors; we just seldom get there!

It's been called the "nature deficit disorder": kids average 44 hours a week in front of screens; and when they're active, it's often in organized sports rather than exploring nature.

Below are suggestions for family getaways in the Great Outdoors. But first, a special mention: thousands of families sleep under the stars one night in June for the Great American Backyard Campout; if you miss it in 2008, plan for '08!
