Great Outdoors

Family vacations in the Great Outdoors are not only fun, they're a welcome balance to what some call the "nature deficit disorder": kids average 44 hours a week in front of screens (and when do play outside, it's often in organized sports.)
Family Camps
Like summer-camp for kids, but for the whole family; simple lodgings, meals included, many Great Outdoors activities for kids and for everyone-- low budget, too. Not the total immersion experience of camping, but still a wonderful way to get the family into the Great Outdoors.
Great Outdoors: Summer Ideas
It's been called the "nature deficit disorder": kids average 44 hours a week in front of screens; and when they're active, it's often in organized sports rather than exploring nature. To counteract all this -- and have a memorable vacation in beautiful surroundings --below are suggestions for family getaways in the Great Outdoors.
National Parks: Family Programs
National Parks not only offer the Great Outdoors, (and in some cases, splendid historic inns), they also have some special features for families.
Family Adventure Vacations
Family Adventure Vacations: what to expect from this special form of family travel-- type of experience, price range, etc.
Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park is unique in the world. Be wowed by its geothermal natural wonders (hot springs, geysers, other-worldly "terraces"); its wildlife including wolves, moose, and grizzly bear; and its historic inns.
Rafting Trips
White-water rafting trips can be a great way to enjoy the Great Outdoors: scenic views from the river, plus the fun of whitewater. On the easier river runs, even young kids can participate (and some companies offer "river floats" with no whitewater at all.)
National Wildlife Refuges
Great places to get out in the Great Outdoors: every state has at least one National Wildlife Refuge, and most major cities have one within an hour’s drive. Early June is a great time to visit: many places have special events for families during "Fishing Week".
Great Outdoors: Overview
Whether it's rafting or camping or an all-details-handled outdoors adventure, for many the idea of a great family vacation - especially in summer - is to spend time in the Great Outdoors.
