Programs for Kids & Families

Yellowstone- Old Faithful geyser

Old Faithful geyser, Yellowstone

Sure, you know that National Parks offer the Great Outdoors. You may also know about their wonderful historic inns (such as personal fave the Old Faithful Inn.)

But you may not know about three special features at National Parks for families.

  • Junior Rangers: with this (minimal fee) program, kids complete an activity booklet with puzzles and activities about the Park, and get awarded a Junior Ranger patch. For info, see the National Parks site, select a Park, and check For Kids.
  • Park Ranger Programs for kids: many Parks have special programs led by park rangers to introduce wildlife and ecology. Tips: reserve in advance during summer; parents need to accompany kids.  Check National Parks for info.
  • Multi-Day Family Programs
A third great option for families is offered at one of the world's top National Parks. Yellowstone has an amazing array of wildlife (bison, grizzlies, moose) plus unique "geothermal features": it's literaly in a volcanic caldera, burbling and spurting with mud-holes, hot pools, and geysers. Yellowstone is not only fun, it's an education. So, what better way to see it than with a naturalist?

Each summer, the Yellowstone Association Institute offers adventures for families with a naturalist/guide. Try animal tracking, wildlife watching, painting, hiking... 3-night program has family pricing and includes lodging, activities, and some meals. See Yellowstone for Families.

Another way to tour a National Park with a naturalist is with a group adventure company: see, for example, Yellowstone Family Adventure. Though not for the faint-of-pocketbook, you'll get a great all-details-handled experience.
